The novel draws from several historical documents, revealing the true secrets behind the journey and how Joseph Halévy entered Yemen disguised as a Jerusalemite beggar named Yazid Labib Atef . The novel exposes the role of the Yemeni Rabbi Hayyim Habshush in the success of the orientalist's journey, and it clarifies the reality of peaceful coexistence between the tribes and the Jews of Yemen with complete objectivity, far from stereotypical portrayals.
