This article deals with Earthquakes, their causes, and consequences, in addition to methods of characterization including the Richter and Mercalli scales, energy released due to the generated seismic waves. It gives special attention to the last Kahramanmaras- Gaziantep earthquake in Turkey, its magnitude and its energy and the destruction that occurred in the aftermath in both Turkey and Syria. Moreover  it outlines the possible impacts on large dams such as Ataturk , Kiban and Ileus dams in the south eastern Anatolia region where the Gap irrigation project is been constructed, and other dams in Syria and Iraq: namely Tabqa, Haditha and Mosul Dam. The article is concluded by recommendations for future actions to safeguard these dams against earthquakes of similar or even stronger earthquakes that can occur due to the seismic activity along the Northern Anatolia and East Anatolia faults zones.
